eQuaLearn Heat Treat Webinars – a Cost-Efficient Way to Get the Specialist Training On Site

Everyone involved in Special Processes needs to understand what they are doing. To achieve that, they need to get trained and educated in their processes.

The specialist training is localized and usually very expensive. Off-site training in such commodities as Heat Treatment, Composite Technology and Coatings is often limited to infrequent courses at universities and colleges. Such courses tend to be of general nature and require people to travel – often with overnight accommodation needed. This being a direct expenditure, many companies face the additional cost of having employees out of the operations for two or three days.

The eQuaLearn webinars attempt to address this by allowing companies to attend training while on site. Lasting between one to three hours, the online sessions are designed to be completed during the working day, without the added costs and lost time due to travel. All that is required to attend a course is a computer connected to the Internet.

The webinars are interactive, so questions can be asked at any time with immediate answers being provided. Like all eQuaLearn courses, the webinars are conducted by subject matter experts located across continents.

The first series of the eQuaLearn Special Process webinars discuss Heat Treatment. As a whole, they cover just about everything that anyone involved in performing or planning heat treatment needs to understand about the processes they are using.

However, not everyone needs everything, so the webinar structure is modular, with a mix of basic and specialized modules. The basic modules cover the underlying knowledge – the background metallurgy, types of equipment and processes used. The specialist modules then look at the different families of alloys and treatments applied, using the basic modules as assumed knowledge. The basic modules apply to everyone, whereas the specialist modules are of interest only to the relevant specialists.

Below are a few examples of the new eQuaLearn Heat Treating Webinars:

Basic Metallurgy of Heat Treatment

This is a 2-3 hour session which aims to bring anyone from High School standard to at least knowing the terms and concepts inherent in heat treatment. This is applicable to everyone working in Heat Treatment.

The webinar introduces the structure of metals and explains how the structure can affect properties. This leads to an understanding of deformation to then see how the heat treatments can affect simple structures.

All this is explained firstly for pure metals and then the effects of adding extra elements to the mix – literally – by alloying are covered, including diffusion, transformations and solid solutions.

Heat Treatment of Aluminum

This is a 1-2 hour session which builds on the basic metallurgy by dealing with the features and problems peculiar to Aluminum. It is relevant to anyone working with Aluminum, but will be of little or no interest to steel heat treaters.

Starting with very pure aluminum, the effects of alloying elements are explained in terms of how solution treatment works and especially what can go wrong and why. Aging and precipitation are explained.

The practical aspects of this are covered – including why things like heat treatment transfer times, handling with clean gloves and quench delay times are so important. In addition, the webinar talks about how to evaluate heat treatment using the variations in conductivity and hardness inherent in the alloys.

Brazing in Heat Treatment

Brazing – that is, joining parts by heating them while a metal melts to fill the gap – is a highly complex process. Even so, it has been around for over 3000 years.

This session is 2-3 hours and explains how brazing works and why it sometimes does not work. Most Brazing training is included in longer courses dealing with metal joining – usually including all the various welding techniques. This session is specialized and relevant to furnace brazing in particular.

It assumes the basic metallurgy knowledge and then builds on it to include the factors which can affect the braze joint – including: wetting, capillary flow, use of stopping compounds, fluidity, inter-diffusion and isothermal freezing.

The practical aspects are then explained – why parts must be clean, the need for controlled heating and cooling regimes, why we want to minimize the exposure time in the brazing range.
